2019 -2020 School Year

February 2020

Hawkeye earns the First Amendment Press Freedom Award

For the seventh year in a row (and ninth time overall), our learning community has been named a recipient of the prestigious First Amendment Press Freedom Award. While the focus of this award is on the relationship between the student media and our campus community, the award is presented to the entire school because of its commitment to the principles of the First Amendment. None of this is possible without the concerted effort of all of us – students, staff, administration, district personnel, CTE staff, school board and community. Your continued support of the incredible tradition we have here at MTHS goes all the way back to the school's inception in 1960 and it is certainly unique to our region. Here is the official press release: http://jea.org/wp/blog/2020/02/25/9-schools-win-first-amendment-press-freedom-award/

theHawkeye.org named an
NSPA Pacemaker Finalist for 2020!

The Hawkeye's website – theHawkeye.org – has just been named an NSPA Pacemaker Finalist for 2020! The Pacemaker is the top award that any student publication can earn. As the NSPA press release states in part:

“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” NSPA executive director Laura Widmer said. “NSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.”  The 28 Pacemaker finalists represent 12 states.

While this isn't the first time the Hawkeye has been named a Pacemaker finalist, I can assure you that this never gets old and I couldn't be more proud of these students and their work.

Thank you for your continued support of our program and student journalism here at MTHS.  ~ Vince DeMiero, Adviser

Jazz Makes Its Mark at the Oregon Jazz Festival

Jazz Ensemble 1 was selected to perform in the evening concert as the outstanding high school ensemble from the Oregon Jazz Festival.  (It is not competitive, but they do select one high school and one middle school as showcase bands.) We could only play one song so we decided to play the beginning of one of our tunes and segue into another song.  At the last minute I was able to get access to Sean Jones in his dressing room and invited him to sit in with us on stage.  He played with us on Duke Ellington's Happy-Go-Lucky Local and it was an amazing performance by him and the students.  We received a wonderful standing ovation from the audience.

Several students received "Outstanding Musicianship Awards" at the festival:

For Big Band performances:

Damaris Ibrahim - Bass - Jazz Ensemble 3

Jonas Rivera - Tenor Sax - Jazz Ensemble 2

Nate Klasses - Drums - Jazz Ensemble 2

Caden Hargrave - Alto Sax - Jazz Ensemble 1

Alec Raring - Trombone - Jazz Ensemble 1
