College Credit Options in High School
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
Why take AP?
Many colleges recognize that your AP scores demonstrate that you already know the material in certain courses they offer. So they’ll let you skip those courses. These could be introductory courses required in your major, or core courses that the college requires all its students to take. Letting you skip these courses (so you can go right into advanced courses) is called granting you advanced placement.
Some students use the advanced placement earned through AP to free up space in their schedule so they can pursue a double major or take part in an internship or other special program. In some cases, you’ll get both credit and advanced placement for a qualifying AP score. You’ll earn the credits and be able to skip a course.
What's the difference between AP and Honors?
Advanced Placement (AP) classes are generally considered more rigorous than Honors classes, primarily because they're standardized at a national level and culminate in AP exams that can potentially earn you college credit. Colleges tend to prefer AP classes because they demonstrate a student's ability to handle college-level coursework. That said, Honors classes are also viewed positively, and still show an elevated level of challenge beyond standard classes and suggest that you're pushing yourself academically, which speaks well of your intellectual passion and readiness to thrive in a more difficult academic environment.
How do I get College Credit from an AP class?
To get College Credit from an AP class, you must enroll in an approved AP class and then take the corresponding AP test. Exams are scored from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest score and 5 being the highest. Most colleges that accept AP scores will give you credit for 4s and 5s, though some colleges may honor 3s. Public institutions tend to be more flexible in accepting AP credits versus private institutions.
To get college credit or placement for your AP scores, you have to request that College Board sends an official AP score report to the college.
Other important facts:
- You can send your scores for free to one recipient every year that you take AP Exams. Make sure to take advantage of your free score send before the yearly June 20 deadline.
- You can send scores online anytime for a fee.
- You can order as many score reports as you need online after scores are released.
- Score reports include both this year's and past AP Exam scores.
- Your score report includes all your scores from all the AP Exams you took in the past. Your entire score history will be sent to your designated college, university, or scholarship program unless you choose to withhold or cancel any of your scores.
- You should check college deadlines.
- If you’re a senior entering college in the fall, check your college’s deadline for getting AP scores. We encourage you to send scores as soon as possible to make sure they’re received in time.
- You can look up past AP Exam dates.
- You can look up exam dates for the past five years if you need to know when you took an AP Exam.
College in the High School (CHS)
If you are in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade—CHS is for you! Stay at your high school and earn credits toward your graduation requirements with an additional .5 semester credit for each college class AND earn college credits that transfer as General Education credits at nearly every public (and many private) two or four-year colleges/universities. You will save money: no transportation costs; no cost for books (often $150 per college course); lower future student loans because CHS credits transfer; and CHS tuition is free. CHS credits will be entered onto an official college transcript and your high school transcript will show that you have taken an academically rigorous college course—which may impress the Admissions Office of your preferred college!
