What is a No Credit (NC) Grade?

Important Information for Middle School and High School Families

on the No Credit, NC Grade

In the final weeks of the semester, we want to provide information on the No Credit, NC grade.  With many students working hard to raise their grades over the next few weeks, it is important for our students and their families to understand fully the NC grade and the processes for addressing these marks when the semester ends.

More on NC Grades

The NC is assigned when a student has not earned a passing grade (A, B, C, or D).  While a failing grade (F)  will not be assigned, a grade of NC means the student has not earned credit for the course.  In order to meet graduation requirements, students will need to work very hard to change the NC grade to a passing grade.

Students assigned an NC for a course will be given opportunities to re-engage in learning and complete the course.  A plan for course completion and earning credit will be developed between the teacher, student, families, counselors, and administrators, as appropriate.

The opportunities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the teacher who assigned the NC to finish coursework needed to earn a passing grade is preferred

  • Completing coursework in Summer School

  • Independent Study developed in consultation with the teacher

  • Taking and completing online courses through our Edmonds eLearning Academy
  • Earning competency-based credits through assessments or High School and Beyond Plan Pathways

If your child received any NC grades on their first quarter grade report, it is important to check in with them to see how things are going as we near the end of the semester.  Our teachers have been consulting with students and communicating with families about what is needed to raise grades in their courses.  There is still time to raise current NCs to passing grades!  If you have any questions about this or other grading concerns, please contact your child’s school.
